puc|coon «puh KOON», noun.
1. any one of various plants yielding a red dye, especially the bloodroot, and certain American plants of the borage family.
2. the pigment or dye obtained from any one of these plants.
[American English < Algonkian (Powhatan) păhkan, a plant whose juice was used for dyeing < an Algonkian root meaning “blood.” See related etym. at poke4. (Cf.poke)]
